About Dr. Lackey
Dr. J. Taylor Lackey is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in conditions of the hand, wrist, and elbow. After completing his training in Southern California, he returned home to Austin to provide specialized care at Austin Sports Medicine, where he focuses on helping patients return to work, sports, and daily activities.
As a Central Texas native and University of Texas alum, Dr. Lackey has deep roots in the Austin area. After medical school at Baylor College of Medicine and orthopedic residency at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, he pursued advanced fellowship training in hand, upper extremity, and microsurgery at UC Irvine. This additional year of specialized training focused exclusively on complex conditions of the hand, wrist, and elbow.
Outside the clinic, Dr. Lackey enjoys spending time on local lakes, hiking in the Hill Country, following UT athletics, and keeping up with Austin's evolving tech scene. He understands that Central Texas residents lead active lives, and his goal is to get patients back to doing what they love as quickly and safely as possible.

Scope of Practice
Dr. Lackey treats the full spectrum of hand, wrist, and elbow conditions. This includes sports injuries like ligament tears and fractures, nerve conditions such as carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel syndrome, tendon injuries and repairs, arthritis of the hand and wrist, and acute trauma. He works with athletes, manual laborers, musicians, and anyone whose hand or arm function is affecting their life.
Philosophy of Care
Every patient has different goals, different tolerance for downtime, and different expectations. Dr. Lackey takes time to understand what matters most to you before recommending a treatment plan. Many conditions improve with conservative care, including therapy, bracing, or injections. When surgery is the best option, he uses the latest minimally invasive techniques to reduce recovery time and optimize outcomes. You'll always understand your options, and you'll never feel rushed.
